WHO WE ARE:
Our mission is to join together concerned residents to encourage responsible development that protects our people, our environmental resources, and our future.
Many neighbors are willing to donate their time, talent and treasure to fighting this. Creating Hardyston Responsible Development (HRD) is the community’s response and demand for transparency in our government and to be represented and protected against these types of development threats.
HRD supports economic development that:
- Is consistent with the scope and scale of our community
- Engages and considers the surrounding communities
- Weighs the overall societal costs to Sussex County
Our community is dedicated to preserving the unique character of Sussex County and is giving a voice to the residents that will be affected by this project throughout the region.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Donations: We need to hire our own experts to fairly evaluate the Redevelopment plan that not only paves the way for this mega development, it allows for the site to be blasted and quarried to prepare it. Steep slopes in the Highlands are important and disturbing them can profoundly increase stormwater and create impacts to groundwater supplies. If plans to blast and quarry the mountain are permitted, concerns include generating harmful silica dust and the destruction of wildlife.
Natural Partners: The Highlands area provides clean drinking water to 70% of the state.
Because we are fighting for policies and practices that protect the New Jersey Highlands, HRD falls under the 501(c)(3) nonprofit status of the NJ Highlands Coalition (NJHC).
Make a tax-deductible donation to the NJ Highlands Coalition with “Hardyston” or “HRD” in the memo. Your contribution will aid our efforts in hiring credentialed experts to provide testimony to the Hardyston Township Council and Land Use Board.

Time & Talent: We need your time to attend Town Council, Land Use Board meetings, plan fundraisers, research the traffic, environmental and groundwater issues involved and develop strategies to inform the surrounding community of this development. Find the meeting schedules here: https://hardyston.com/
Join our FB Discussion Group: SPARTA RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT. Inspired by the neighboring Sparta Responsible Development community, Hardyston and surrounding township residents connected over concerns that the community was not being fully informed or engaged. Joining the Responsible Development conversation on this established Facebook page gives us a concerned audience of 1,600 members to converse with, learn from and inform.

Rateables are a Myth: Municipal leaders typically court large non-residential projects, but the result has proven to be a disappointment. According to a New Jersey Futures report, the “conventional wisdom on ratables are not supported by evidence”.
